Shanghai International Studies University’s School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) has recently received a series of recognitions for the excellent work of its female faculty and its efforts in supporting women in the academic workplace.
At the 115th International Women’s Day Commemoration organized by the Shanghai education system in March 2025, SJC was recognized as a 2023–2024 “March 8th Red Banner Collective.” With women comprising nearly 70% of its faculty, the school has long emphasized the importance of supporting female leadership and encouraging their contributions in the field of international communication. The school continues to focus on cultivating global communication talent while creating an environment where women can thrive professionally and personally.
Another key initiative is the enhancement of SJC’s “Mommy’s House,” which earned a Four-Star rating from the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions in July 2024. The space offers facilities such as a nursing room, relaxation area, parenting books, and air purifiers, and is designed to help working mothers manage their dual responsibilities more comfortably. The school has also introduced programs such as “A Talk with the Female Party Secretary” and “March Women’s Month” to further support the personal and professional development of female faculty members.
Individual achievements have also been recognized. Professor Wu Xiujuan received the SISU “SISU March 8th Red Banner Holder” award for her contributions to journalism education and her work in integrating global perspectives into the curriculum. Her research in regional studies and international communication continues to play an important role in shaping academic understanding in this area.
Liu Jieyun, awarded the “SISU Excellent Women’s Affairs Worker” honor, has led several projects aimed at supporting women on campus. She played a key role in upgrading Mommy’s House, supported parenting education initiatives through SISU’s labor union platform “Yujingyuan,” and organized educational events such as writing workshops for kids and children’s book exchanges. Her work has helped provide both practical support and meaningful engagement opportunities for faculty members and their families.
SJC’s recent recognitions reflect the value it places on building a supportive academic environment. Going forward, the school plans to continue strengthening its initiatives for women—ranging from infrastructure improvements to wellness programs—while encouraging both individual growth and collective progress across the university community.
