Recently, the Ministry of Education of the PRC announced the list of newly added Chinese universities participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University (SCO University). Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has been selected for the regional studies and journalism clusters and will serve as the leading Chinese institution for the journalism cluster.

Moving forward, SISU will leverage its academic strengths in foreign languages and literature, journalism and communication, and area studies to enhance collaboration among SCO member states in global communication and area studies. The university aims to significantly advance higher education cooperation and cultural exchanges between China and SCO countries.

SCO University is a non-physical cooperation network among higher education institutions in SCO member states. It was proposed in 2007 by Russian President, Vladimir Putin. The initiative seeks to strengthen mutual trust and good-neighborly relations among SCO member states, promote integration in education, research, and technology, and inject new momentum into cooperation in these fields. It also aims to provide high-quality modern higher education for young people, create more opportunities for academic exchanges among teachers and researchers, and foster more effective cooperation in politics, economy and trade, science and technology, and culture among SCO member states.
