SISU Professor Discusses Enhancing Urban Communication and Nanjing’s Global Image at Xinhua Forum

update:2025-01-14

Yan Yining, Professor and Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), shared insights on improving urban international communication in an interview with Xinhua News Agency during the 4th Forum on Global Communication of Cities. Held in Nanjing from December 23 to 25, the forum focused on how digital intelligence can help build a more dynamic communication framework.

Yan emphasized the importance of storytelling, digital technologies, and creating strong city symbols to enhance a city’s international image. She said, “Content creation across various media—like literature, film, and theater—can all be framed around the theme of peace in Nanjing.”

According to Yan, cities must first identify their unique attributes and create memorable symbols that can be easily shared online. In today’s digital age, these symbols need to be visually representative of the city. She also highlighted the value of multi-perspective narratives, where bloggers, tourists, and businesses can contribute to a more comprehensive story. Finally, Yan stressed the importance of enriching the urban experience, allowing people to engage with the city on an emotional and sensory level.

To attract international attention, Yan believes city stories should focus on people. She explained that global audiences are drawn to narratives that show how a city’s development impacts its people and how collective memories shape the urban experience.

Yan noted that new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and big data, are transforming communication. By incorporating augmented and virtual reality, these technologies can expand storytelling possibilities, enhance interactivity, and provide new digital experiences for global audiences.

For Nanjing, Yan suggested aligning its international image with global values. As an “International City of Peace,” Nanjing’s rich history and cultural landmarks—such as the Music Platform at Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, home to peace-symbolizing doves—can serve as powerful symbols. By framing various activities—tourism, academic research, and cultural exchanges—around the theme of peace, Nanjing can strengthen its global identity.
