Quzhou, Zhejiang, October 2024 – Professor Guo Ke, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), and Professor Yan Yining, Associate Dean for Teaching, led a delegation of faculty members to participate in the First Summit Seminar on the Development of the Short Video Industry, held in Quzhou, Zhejiang.
During the seminar’s morning session, Professor Yan took part in a roundtable discussion focused on the industry trends in vertical video short dramas and strategies for taking these productions global. Engaging with scholars from prestigious institutions such as Zhejiang University and the Shanghai Theatre Academy, as well as industry experts, Professor Yan shared her insights into the growing market potential of Chinese vertical short dramas. She emphasized the global appeal of this genre, which is fueled by the widespread use of mobile internet, and outlined strategies for promoting these dramas internationally. Her presentation also delved into key aspects such as multilingual translation, cultural adaptation, and the ethical considerations of crafting value-driven narratives for a global audience.
In the afternoon session, Professors Guo and Yan continued their participation with thematic presentations, further engaging in discussions about the future of the short video industry. A highlight of the afternoon was a signing ceremony in which Professor Guo, representing SISU, signed cooperation agreements with other leading institutions and industry partners. These agreements are designed to strengthen collaboration in the field of vertical short dramas, laying the groundwork for joint research projects, faculty and student exchanges, and the development of specialized curricula.
Professor Guo noted that the seminar provided a valuable opportunity for SISU to build connections with key industry representatives. The insights and collaborations established will play a crucial role in advancing SISU’s ongoing research and teaching initiatives in the field of vertical short dramas, further enhancing the university’s presence and impact in the rapidly evolving short video industry.
