Journalism (International Journalism) (Four-year undergraduate program)

The Journalism program was launched in 1983. Being the very first non-language undergraduate program at Shanghai International Studies University, the journalism program is also one of the earliest international journalism program in China. The program boasts about 140 students now and a distinguished and dedicated faculty team. The program prepares the students for professional life in the digital era of media convergence. Accordingly, the curriculum highlights skills central to English news production in the digital age as well as journalism and communication theories that render an enduring understanding of today’s media. The curriculum includes such major courses as Marxist Journalism, International News Reporting, Fundamentals of Journalism and Communication Studies, International Communication, Advanced English News Writing, English Opinion Writing, English Business News Writing, English Feature Writing, Data Journalism, English Stylistics for Journalism, and() English News Translation and Editing. In 2021, the program was enlisted in the National First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Project. Making full use of the resources brought by a language-based university, the program initiates an English + journalism model of teaching and has developed over the years both a minor program and a graduate program for the multi-lingual students of SISU. Armed with both good language skills and multi-media dexterity, and a proper understanding of the mechanism of the media now, the program’s graduates are popular in the job market. Employment opportunities include news production and other media-related jobs in media organizations, government departments, corporations, researching and education institutions.
