Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) holds the Multilingual Corner every Thursday this semester to help students from different majors broaden their horizons and experience different cultures.

The Multilingual Corner, one part of SISU Multi-Language Expo, build an exchange platform regularly for students. SISU has held four activities so far. They were “English plus Russian”, “English plus Eastern Language”, “English plus German” and “English plus Japanese”. Some foreign teachers joined in the on-site communication and discussions.

Students in English and Russian major actively took part in the first “English plus Russian” Corner on Feb.28. Максим Сергеевич Шишков, a foreign teacher in SISU’s School of Russian and Eurasian Studies, introduced several topics in English, such as differences between Christmas in Russia and Europe and how Russians celebrate New Years. Максим’s speech on Russian festivals and culture helped students of different majors learn about the interesting customs and rich culture of Russia.

Many students showed great interest in Russian and Russian culture in the Multilingual Corner. Some juniors majoring in Russian taught them how to pronounce the words. The success of the “English plus Russian” Corner set an example for the follow-up activities.

Before the Multilingual Corner, a series of activities of SISU Multi-Language EXPO impressed the students a lot. SISU plans to offer more multi-language communication activities and build an exchange platform for students. These measures will help cultivate talents with skills in cross-cultural communication.
