he Consul General for the United States in Shanghai, Hanscom Smith, and three of his staff members visited Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) on October 22.

University President Cao Deming met Smith and staff at the Hongkou Campus to discuss educational exchange and cultural cooperation between China and the United States in the afternoon.

Cao explained the university’s characteristics and development, focusing on its cultivating in international and area studies.

He pointed out that those cultural and educational exchanges help to deepen the relationship between the two countries and that SISU students are encouraged to study at American universities. The university also encourages American students to study at SISU, he said.

Smith emphasized the importance of China-U.S. relations and the countries’ shared interests in climate change and economic trade. He said the U.S. consulate in Shanghai would encourage more American students to attend cultural activities in Shanghai.

Staff accompanying Smith included Yu Yuying, deputy consul general of the United States in Shanghai; Josh Lustig, cultural officer; and Wang Yuchen, deputy project manager.

Joining Cao at the meeting from SISU were Guo Shuyong, Dan of the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRDA); Wang Zheng, associate director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange; Wang Xin, associate dean of the School of English Studies; and Jin Jiyong, associate dean of SIRDA.

After the meeting, Smith discussed with SISU students and teachers about the issues of Sino-U.S. cultural and educational exchanges after the meeting.
