T

ang Yili, an associated professor of the School of Chinese Studies and Exchange at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), won second prize in the first Shanghai University Chinese Teaching Contest, which was held recently by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and hosted by Shanghai Universities Alliance of Chinese Language Education.

The contest was divided into the preliminary and the final. The preliminary was held in this July, which contained 51 teacher participants from 29 universities. Expert judges conducted a compositive assessment to select the finalists who could enter one of the four groups in the final: ancient Chinese, modern Chinese, Chinese writing, and Chinese speech.

Tang was in the “modern Chinese” group with a theme “Dialect: regional branch of modern Chinese”. Starting with the comparison of Putian dialect in southeast China, Shanghai dialect and Chongqing dialect in southwest China, she deeply analyzed the difference and relation among the dialects’ pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, and cited various resources. She paid attention to the interaction with students, which made her lesson interesting and vivid, and gained good reputation among both the students and expert judges.

The contest was a part of the 18th “national mandarin promotion week”, aiming at enhancing the teaching ability and professional level of university Chinese teachers, strengthening the quality of Chinese education in universities, and promoting the Chinese culture.
