0 years ago, in his capacity as a student of Shanghai International Study University (SISU), the man shed sweats and tears all the way through various competitions on the field; 20 years later, he continued to interpret his love of sports in another identity. Gu Tianzhu, a teacher from SISU’s School of Journalism and Communication, tells about his predestination with the President's Cup of SISU.

The SISU President's Cup of SISU was held in the late 1980s. Organized by SISU’s Faculty for Physical Education and the Students’ Union, it is a brand sports meeting project of SISU, including different kinds of events (basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, softball, badminton, table tennis and aerobics), and is also a game which students participate in most and love most for SISU.

Gu Tianzhu took part in the SISU President's Cup from 1995.

“The project was in the initial stages when I was a player, although the events and site conditions were not perfect, everybody's enthusiasm for it was very high. The biggest difference was the number of the events, so the players and spectators were more focused and more actively participated in the games,” he said.

He recalled the days when he stayed at SISU in nearly 20 years, and said, if SISU was his home, the SISU President's cup was like the Spring Festival he would have every year.

From being a student to a teacher, Gu's enthusiasm for the President's Cup never quits. Every year he actively participates in the games, such as basketball, tennis, volleyball and ping-pong.

“For the faculty team, the President's Cup is more of an exercise, which helps the teachers to maintain a good state of health. I think that the outcome is not very important as long as they could enjoy the game,” he said and hoped that more teachers could take to the daily sports and enjoy the exercise as much as possible.

Gu serves as an advisor of the team of School of Journalism and Communication. “Defense, defense!” “Strike!” On the basketball court, you can always see him cry for the team. Sometimes he would jump up excitedly for a spectacular goal, and sometimes he would also clench his teeth for losing points.

“Focus!” “Don't be nervous!” “Running faster!” When standing on the softball field, starting from the warm-up of the pre-match, he would practice all the way with the team, and make out feasible tactics.

“He is always there staying with the softball team from the beginning to the end during the SISU President’s Cup, and trains with us during his spare time,” said Xu Tiantian, leader of the softball team in the journalism school.

“The thing that impressed me most was that after we lost to the School of Law, he said ‘We win together and also lose together!’, which touched me deeply that I felt our team had a strong backer to support every member of us,” she said.

“We will win this game, come on everybody!”, on the volleyball court, you can also see the figure of Gu, holding his fists tightly with fixed eye, seeming to be more nervous than any players on the field.

There were a variety of reasons why he loved sports. “When I was a kid I took to the sport training instantly,” He listed that sport was a good way to relax and to keep the body’s flexibility, strength and endurance, “Moreover, through the game you can really make some bosom friends.”

He wouldn't miss the chance of cheering the athletes up as long as he was available. He knew about a lot of players on the field, some were the students he taught, some were his usual partners, and more were the ones he met during the competitions.

During the interview, you can feel the vigor of a 20-year–old man, and perhaps this is the temperament of a man who loves sport from the inside out. For him, the age is not an excuse to stop playing sports. When he was young, he attached more importance to fighting with all his might on the field; now he pays more attention to the mental relaxation and physical exercise.

“Happy is always there, of course, if you really enjoy sports and pour your energy into it, then the pleasure will accompany you all the time.” This is the attitude of his sporting life.
